  • Titulaire d'une licence en histoire moderne de l'University College d'Oxford en 1960 et une maîtrise en 1963. Entre 1960 et 1966, il a enseigné les études culturelles à l’Université américaine de Beyrouth. Il a obtenu un doctorat en études islamiques de l'Université de Chicago en 1970. Cette année-là, il est retourné à l'AUB en tant que professeur adjoint au département d'histoire. Il a enseigné à l'AUB pendant la guerre civile libanaise après un bref départ de 1985 à 1986 pour devenir chercheur principal au St. Antony's College d'Oxford. En 1996, il a été nommé professeur d'arabe de Sir Thomas Adams et membre du King's College de Cambridge, ainsi que directeur du Centre d'études sur le Moyen-Orient. Il est retourné à l'AUB en 2002 pour occuper son poste actuel de président de Shaykh Zayid au Centre pour les études arabes et du Moyen-Orient.

Biography

  • In 1952, he attended Haileybury College in Hertford, England where he was on the classical side (Latin, Greek and Ancient History). He went on to University College, Oxford, where he received a B.A. in Modern History in 1960 and his master's degree three years later. Between 1960 and 1966, he was an instructor of Cultural Studies at the American University of Beirut. He received a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1970. That year he returned to AUB as an assistant professor in the History Department. He taught at AUB through the Lebanese Civil War with a brief departure from 1985 to 1986 to become a senior research associate at St. Antony's College, Oxford. In 1996 he was named the Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic and a fellow of King's College, Cambridge as well as director of the Center of Middle Eastern Studies there. He returned to AUB again in 2002 to occupy his current position as Shaykh Zayid Chair at the Center for Arab and Middle East Studies
