- Originaire de Bagdad, d'une famille kūfienne.- Doté d'une grande curiosité intellectuelle et voyageant énormément, y compris en dehors du monde musulman, ses sources sont nombreuses et diversifiées.- Il écrit sur de nombreuses thématiques.- Éclectique, il avait une sympathie pour le muʿtazilisme mais aussi pour l'imamisme duodécimain, ce qui laissait penser qu'il était šīʿite.- La plupart de ses ouvrages ont été perdus.- L'intérêt de son oeuvre réside dans sa méthode historique, son intérêt pour les nations extérieures à l'Islam, son ouverture d'esprit et sa vision universelle de l'histoire.- Il écrit à destination d'un public cultivé qui souhaite élargir sa connaissance

- From Baghdad, from a Kūfan family.- He had a great intellectual curiosity and travelled a lot, including in the non-Muslim world, so he had many and varied sources.- He wrote on numerous topics.- He was eclectic, he was sympathetic to the muʿtazilism but also to the Twelver Imāmī Šīʿism, which let guess that he was Šīʿa.- Most of his works have been lost.- His work is interesting due to his historical methodology, his interest in nations foreign to Islam, his open-mindedness and his universal vision of history.- He wrote for a cultivated public which seeks to educate itself
