Sa mère était persane.- La culture persane a eu une certaine place dans ses poèmes.- Son père faisait partie de l'armée du dernier Umayyade Marwān II.- A eu différents maîtres poètes.- A suivi des cours de de Kurʾān, de ḥadīṯ et de grammaire,- Séjour chez les Bédouins pour l'apprentissage de la langue arabe.- Habitait à Bagdad la majorité de sa vie.- A fui un temps en Égypte après la chute de ses bienfaiteurs les Barmakides.- Mort incertaine.- Proche de la famille des savants šīʿites des Āl Nawbaḥt qui s'occupa de la recension des vers du poète après sa mort.- Représentant de la nouvelle école poétique des muḥdaṯūn.- Réputation de buveur.- Homosexualité manifeste dans ses poèmes, loue l'amour des jeunes garçons.- Poésie bachique.- Autodérision.- Son Dīwān est le premier à renfermer un chapitre entier de poésies cynégétiques.- Moquerie des institutions islamiques.
