Uṣūl al-arbaʿīn
Part of Ǧawāhir al-Qurʾān .
كتاب وضع فيه مؤلفه خلاصة كتبه وزبدتها كإحياء علوم الدين والاقتصاد في الاعتقاد وبداية الهداية وغير ذلك مما هو في موضوعه، حتى جمع فيه زبدة علوم القرآن كما قال هو. وقد قسّمه الغزالي إلى أربعة أقسام، فجاء القسم الأول: في أصول العقائد التي ينبني عليها الدين، والتي هي الخطوة الأولى فيه ومنها ينطلق. والقسم الثاني: في الأعمال الظاهرة والعبادات، حيث شرحها من خلاله معالمها وأسرارها. والقسم الثالث: في تزكية القلب عن الأخلاق المذمومة. والقسم الرابع: في تحليتها بالأخلاق المحمودة بعد تخليتها.

Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn
Divided into four parts, each containing ten chapters. Part one deals with knowledge and the requirements of faith—ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qurʾān, and so forth; part two concentrates on people and society—the manners related to eating, marriage, earning a living, and friendship; parts three and four are dedicated to the inner life of the soul and discuss first the vices that people must overcome in themselves and then the virtues that they must strive to achieve.
