One of the earliest writings to attempt to cover Ḥadīṯ methodology,is this dictionary book by al-Ṭabarānī, in which he writes Prophetic traditions narrated by his Sheiks in an alphabetical order as stated in his introduction. This book, though small volumes, is of high importance due to several reasons, amongst are being full of attributed Prophetic traditions, that are traceable to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), together with untraceable ones, either attributed narration to a Prophet companion, or a successor of Prophet companions. Furthermore, the author's narrations have various additions in the text of traditions, and therefore, scholars had made several transmissions

كتاب ترجم فيه المؤلف لعدد من الصحابة الذين رووا عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، من الرجال والنساء، مرتبًا على حروف المعجم. وقد بدأ بالعشرة المبشرين بالجنة رضوان الله عليهم جميعا، مخرِّجًا عن كل واحد منهم حديثًا، أو حديثين، أو ثلاثًا، أو أكثر من ذلك على حسب كثرة روايتهم وقلتها. وإذا كان الصحابي من المقلين في رواية الحديث، خرَّج كل أحاديثه، ومن لم يكن له رواية عن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وكان له ذكر من أصحابه من استشهد أو تقدم موته، ذكره في كتب المغازي وتاريخ العلماء. فكان يذكر الأسماء والأحاديث التي رووها والمشاهد التي شهدوها مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب على نحو خمسة وعشرين ألف حديث.
